Northern Geneskool - Workshops at UNBC

At UNBC, students in grades 9 to 12 can be a CSI lab technician for a day and solve a mystery with molecular biology techniques, including PCR and gel electrophoresis. We highly recommend this workshop as it provides a great introduction and practical experience of genetics and molecular lab techniques. Students also have the opportunity to isolate DNA. (limited to grades 9 to 12)
A kayaker has been found stabbed in the chest. Thorough and diligent analysis of blood and DNA evidence will be crucial to put this cold-blooded killer behind bars for good. This is your mission as a CSI Forensic Scientist! Are you up to the challenge?

See the Geneskool CSI Activity Page for a preview of similar mysteries, available online.

Geneskool CSI dovetails with the high school biology curriculum. The activities throughout the workshop are put into context, not only explaining the scientific detail but exploring the applications and impact of genetic technologies on Canadian society.

This hands‐on workshop brings molecular biology to regions where there are fewer opportunities for interaction with advanced lab technology. The workshops are generally held at the University of Northern British Columbia Prince George campus which provides space, available equipment and support.
