DNA
has fascinated me since I learned about it in high school. It’s amazing
how much such a small molecule can do! This is just one reason why I
love to be involved in fun programs like Geneskool, where we get to
learn about and use DNA.
I am currently a PhD candidate at UBC. I’m in the Wood Science
Department, and I study how particular genes affect how trees make part
of their woody tissue. I wasn’t always interested in plants and trees,
but when I took a plant biochemistry course in the 3rd year of my
undergrad, I was hooked. I had an amazing opportunity to work in a lab
during my undergraduate degree and I really enjoyed being able to see
how molecular biology worked first hand. I continued to work in the
same lab and get my master’s degree. Although science is a big part of
my life, I also love to run, bike, snowboard, surf, and cook.
In addition to being a student, I also enjoy being able to teach other
students. For me, being able to have a hands-on experience really
helped me understand all the theory I learned in class, so I love to be
able to share that with others. Geneskool is the perfect opportunity!
