Welcome to GENESKOOL 2009! I am thrilled to be a part of this exciting new program and look forward to meeting all of this year’s participants. I’m currently in third year at UBC, studying Microbiology and Immunology. Back in grade 10, I attended a combined physics/genetics summer camp organized by Cathy, the GENESKOOL director. At the time, I knew I loved immunology but didn’t have a clue what it was like to work in a lab. I ended up enjoying it so much that I went on to complete several research projects during high school, participate in two very exciting Canada-Wide Science Fairs, and work as a Summer Student at QLT Inc., a local biotech company. I received lots of help and encouragement along the way and as a result I enjoy helping other students explore the challenging yet fascinating world of biotechnology! I’m also very interested in biomedical ethics, and when I’m not being sciency I enjoy cross-country skiing, hiking, canoeing, water-colour painting, music of all sorts, and English literature.
If you think you might be interested in genetics, forensics, or medicine, I strongly encourage you to apply for what promises to be a fantastic GENESKOOL year!
