Ultrasound is a technology that uses sound waves to create a picture. An ultrasound technician (sonographer) uses a hand-held wand (transducer) to direct sound waves at the internal body part of interest. The reflection or return of these waves creates a black/white image. Fluid appears black, solid material like bone appears white and other tissues, like most organs, appear as shades of grey. |
