Karyotype
What it's not: A type of pipe organ played at circuses.
What it is: What you call the specific set of chromosomes characterizing a particular species. In other words, the distinctive number, shape and size of the chromosomes in its cells determine an organism’s karyotype. So humans have 46 chromosomes (two pairs each of 1 to 22 and a pair of sex chromosomes), whereas yeast have 5 (chromosomes a to e).
