Can you change your genes to live longer?

Ah, the eternal quest for the fountain of youth…

At the moment, there’s nothing available for humans use to prolong their lives through genetics. Although, there have been very interesting studies done that illustrate how fruit flies in the lab can live longer if they are kept at colder temperatures (probably due to slowed metabolic processes - brrr! Not worth it, I think…), or if they eat less. It’s been seen that in mice and fruit flies, calorie restriction seems to increase lifespan - but a significant caloric restriction is necessary to get the benefit (you have to eat about 30% less!)

So, the secret to longer life seems to be to live as a Popsicle, eat less, or discover the mythical Fountain of Youth. Not sure how realistic any of those options is for most people. !
