Job title and general description

Technician Level III UBC Caenorhabditis elegans Genomics Facility - Expression Group GFP Expression Imaging Lab

Members of our research team produce a variety of C.elegans worms that express Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) due to the incorporation of this marker into specific genes. We are studying the expression patterns of these target genes. GFP produces a bright green fluorescence which we can visualize under the microscope to observe in which cells and at which stages of development the worms express the labeled gene product.

My job involves the use of specialized microscopes and computer systems to visualize the C. elegans. I select the worms of interest using a dissecting microscope and then I can look in more detail using a higher magnification compound microscope. To gather a sequence of images I use a specialized system called a ‘4D microscope’. This system combines a high-powered microscope and a specialized computer system, to captures 3 dimensional images of the worms over time to produce the 4D projection. Using this technology we can gather detailed information on the expression patterns of genes over time in the developing worms.

What specific skills and qualities are needed to do your job?
The task of ‘worm picking’, selecting the desired worms out of the group while observing them under a dissecting microscope, requires good fine motor skills. My job requires an in-depth knowledge of worm physiology and development. The ability to learn new technologies and adapt to changes are also very important for my job.

What do you like most about your work?
We have a great work environment here. I work with a great team of people. The part of my job that I like the most is that I’m always learning.

What don’t you like about your job?
I don’t like the repetition that is a major part of my job. The projects are very interesting but the job can get quite routine at times.

Where do you see your career going from here?
I am still looking at a few options for my future including doing a master degree in genetics, going to law school and pursuing a career in the biotech industry.

What is the range in salary that comes with your job?
The salary for my job ranges around $30,000-$35,000.

When did you know you wanted to work in sciences?
I have been interested in science, especially genetics, for as long as I can remember.

What is your educational background? Degrees? Specific courses?
I have completed a B.Sc. from UBC. My degree included a major in Biology and a minor in Commerce.

What was your favorite course(s) and why?
My favorite courses were quite varied. The ones that come to mind were ‘Strategic Business’, language courses in French and Spanish, and my Molecular Biology lab.

What other hobbies and interests do you have?
I have several hobbies. I enjoy horseback riding and camping. I play the piano and do salsa and belly dancing.

Do you have any advice for young people thinking about getting into your line of work?
Keep your options open. Start with your main interests and follow a path from there. Be sure you are enjoying what you are doing.
