Job title and General Description
Research Associate Tech 4 (supervisor) at the UBC C. elegans Gene Knockout Laboratory - Service Lab The service lab creates, grows, and distributes various forms of C. elegans gene knockout worms to labs internationally. We work in conjunction with a lab in Oklahoma. Research labs that study C.elegans need worms with specific genetic modifications for their studies. We develop these specific variations and maintain a supply that is sent out to our stock centre in the USA for distribution to these research labs.

My job includes supervising a group of technicians in the service lab. This work involves observing the worms under the microscope and selecting the desired group. These worms are then cultured and frozen for shipment.

What specific skills and qualities are needed to do your job?
My job requires experience working in a lab setting with various equipment including microscopes. Computer skills are also important in this job. To work in a lab setting, especially as the supervisor, it is essential to be able to work as a team as well as independently on tasks.

What do you like most about your work?
I enjoy my job’s flexible hours and great team atmosphere. I enjoy working in the lab and being involved in an exciting science.

What don’t you like about your job?
As a service lab we must produce specific amounts of product so some days get very busy.

Where do you see your career going from here?
I am also interested in the field of immunology. I am contemplating continuing my education.

What is the range in salary that comes with your job?
The salary range for a technician such as myself would be $35- 41,000, depending on your related work experience and specific job.

When did you know you wanted to work in sciences?
I have been interested in science for as long as I can remember. As a child I wanted to be a veterinarian. When I finished high school I was considering going into Medicine but I decided to stick with science.

What is your educational background?
I have a BSc from the University of Victoria in Microbiology and Biochemistry. Originally, I started my education working on a degree in Human Performance at U Vic. Unfortunately, I decided that the program was not quite what I was looking to pursue career-wise. I decided to attend Camosun College, where I completed a diploma in Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry. After completing this diploma program I transferred to U Vic to complete my BSc.

What was your favorite course(s) and why?
When I was young I really enjoyed art classes. In university I enjoyed the hands on lab courses the most.

What other hobbies and interests do you have?
I enjoy skiing, gardening and making wine.

Do you have any advice for young people thinking about getting into your line of work?
Always remember to follow your passion. Do what you like to do and make a career of it.
